Abstract A DHD is the most common psychiatric disorder among children, it affects from 6.7 to 7.8% of children worldwide, it is a neurobehavioral developmental disorder characterized by symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity according to DSM-5, it is mostly diagnosed in children before the age of seven years old. Association of other psychiatric disorders with ADHD frequently co-occurs, this comorbidity overall prevalence in children and adolescents ranges from about 40 to 80% depending on the sample. This high prevalence of comorbidity and its frequent occurrence increases the need to assess any comorbid condition when assessing a child for ADHD and makes ADHD an important health issue. The main disorders likely to co-occur with ADHD are oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), conduct disorder (CD), depression and anxiety disorders, bipolar disorders, tic disorders, obsessive compulsive disorders, and autism spectrum disorders. As regards the comorbidity of ADHD and mood disorders, it was stated that children treated for ADHD with comorbid mood symptoms have shown a weaker response to medication and increased rates of adverse events, as recent evidence shows. |
