Abstract Medicinal plants play an important role in the development of potent therapeutic agents. Punica granatum L. (Punicaceae) is a shrub or small tree and considered to be a native of Iran and Afghanistan. It is also found growing wild in the warm valleys and outer hills of the Himalayas, and is cultivated throughout India. One of the main compounds responsible for most of the functional properties of many foods, among them pomegranate fruit, are phenolic compounds in any of their forms. Natural polyphenols can range from simple molecules (phenolic acids, phenylpropanoids, flavonoids) to highly polymerized compounds (lignins, melanins, tannins), with flavonoids representing the most common and widely distributed subgroup. (HPLC) analysis indicated the presence of some polyphenolic compounds which, responsible for their therapeutic potential. According to the less work on the peels of P. granatum against diabetic and overweight the aim of this work concern on the investigation of chemical composition and the relation of its composition with anti-diabetic and anti-obesity. 8.1. Phytochemical Screening Phytochemical screening for flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins, saponins and terpenoids were done following standard methods . 8.2. Chemical composition of punica grantum peels (g/100g): The results showed that, the amount of carbohydrate was highest in dried peels of punica granatum (58.58 %) followed by moisture, dietary fiber, protein, fat and ash (15.74, 12.5 , 6.5, 2.75, 3.93) respectively. . |
