Abstract

Preterm birth it is a global healthcare problem associated and accounts for high perinatal morbidity and mortality and have multiple causes and the underlying physiology and molecular biology of it are complex and not yet fully understood. Progesterone is an essential hormone in the endocrinological milieu of women and has many roles at the different stages of human reproduction, it has been reported that Progesterone supplementation was used during pregnancy to reduce the risk of recurrent preterm birth in women with a history of at least one prior spontaneous preterm delivery. A strong inverse correlation exists between residual cervical length as measured by transvaginal ultrasound and preterm birth. Trappin-2/Elafin is a serine protease inhibitor that plays a major role as an anti-inflammatory mediator at mucosal surfaces and it is thought to play an important role in the pathophysiology of spontaneous preterm birth.
