Abstract

Tough disasters have a potential of producing mass casualties, disaster management in Egypt has attracted only a little attention. Most of the efforts have focused on post-disaster relief activities rather than the pre-disaster preparedness and risk reduction. Aim: The aim of this study was intended to assess nurses’ awareness regarding disaster management and preparedness of El-Mansoura New General Hospital, Subjects and methods: A descriptive research design was utilized. The present study was carried out at El-Mansoura New General Hospital, with a sample 365 nurses and all hospital inpatient department. Two tools were utilized to collect data in this study which are nurses’ awareness for disaster management questionnaire and hospital preparedness for disaster management observational checklists. Results, Nurses are aware about internal disaster and hospital role in disaster, not aware about their role in disaster management especially in response phase, As well hospital prepared for managing external disaster, did not have a disaster management training plan and had deficiency to face internal disaster. Conclusion: The study concluded that generally, nurses had awareness regarding disaster management and preparedness at El-Mansoura New General Hospital. Recommendations: Hospital administration has to design advanced comprehensive disaster training programs for all nursing categories and disaster preparedness plans should be designed and applied at all hospital departments.
