Abstract Background: The primary role of schools is to educate, however, an unhealthy child has difficult time learning so health of children and their learning are reciprocally and related, and one cannot exist without the other. The role of the school nurse encompasses both health and educational goals. Aim: the study aimed to assess the school nurses ’ role in primary schools at Ismailia city. Design: A descriptive analytical research design was used in this study. Setting: The study was conducted at primary schools in Ismailia city ( 86 urban and 98 rural schools) involved. Sample: Convenient sample was used in this study;. They are about (103 school nurses).Tools: One tool consists of two parts were used (structured interviewing questionnaire). First part: This included Socio demographic data. Second part: Observational Checklist developed by American Nurses Association (2005) to assess the school nurses’ role. The results: There was statistically significant that the mean total score of urban school nurses is significantly higher than their counterparts at rural schools at the majority of the school nurse mentor program checklist standards except for health teaching and health promotion (p=0.778), education (p=0.389), professional practice evaluation (p=0.053), professional practice evaluation (p=0.879) and leadership (p=0.238).. Conclusion: It is worthy to mention that the residence of school where school nurses work affected their role. Recommendation: Continuous educational and training programs for school nurses about all items in the school nurse checklist standards to improve their actual role.
