Abstract

Nursing shortage is a common problem throughout the world. The escalating effect of the current shortage of registered nurses is being felt throughout quality of health services and patient satisfaction. The study aimed to investigate the relationship between nurses’ shortage and patient satisfaction in Port Said governmental hospitals. Design: A descriptive comparative correlation design was utilized. Sample: It was carried on 151 nurses and 259 patients. Setting: the study was conducted at all governmental hospitals which are affiliated to (ministry of health and population and health insurance) in Port Said city. Tools: three tools were used to collect data: Formula calculated patient to nurse ratio, Nursing Shortage Perception Scale and Patient Satisfaction Scale. Results: nurse to patient ratio was 1 : 10 in health insurance hospitals, in ministry of health hospitals, it was (1:2 in general medical surgical departments and 2:1 in other specialty).Total nurse to patient ratio was 1:2.Over all knowledge regarding causes of nursing shortage was high among nurses employed at ministry of health and population hospitals (73.03% in surgical departments and 72.46 % in other specialty Elramd, Elmasa Elbahary, Elnasr and Elhomiat). Level of satisfaction was high in hospitals affiliated to ministry of health (88.93% in other specialty and 80.47 in surgical departments). Conclusion: there was strong statistically significant negative correlation between patient’ satisfaction and nursing shortage. Recommendation; the study recommended the need to create safe, satisfying and rewarding work conditions. Decrease workloads, improve wages, encourage participation in decision making and development of opportunities.
