Abstract Background: Breast cancer is one of the most serious diseases affecting physical, psychological and social health of women. Patients with breast cancer who underwent different types of treatment especially mastectomy face different challenges that influence their body image, ability to manage the symptoms and their Self-efficiency. Consequent psychological interventions for breast cancer are requiredto reduce the burden of this disease, to promote and support a high quality life and optimal psychosocial\mental adjustment. Aim: This study aimed to assess the impact of applying a developed Psycho-educational Program on Self- Efficacy, Body Image and Mental Adjustment of post mastectomy women attending at the outpatient clinics, Oncology Center- Mansoura University.Subject and method:A quasi-experimental design was used. The study was conducted at the outpatient clinics, Oncology Center- Mansoura University. The study included44 women. These 44 women were divided into 8 sub-groups, each group consisted of (4- 6 women); each group attended twelve sessions (one session/ week). Tools:Four tools were used to collect data. Tool 1: Socio-demographic and Clinical Data Structured Interview Schedule, Tool 2: General Self- Efficacy Scale, Tool 3:Hopwood Post-Mastectomy Concerns of Body Image Scale,Tool4: Mini-Mental Adjustment to Cancer Scale. Results:There were statistical significant differences in the mean scores of Self Efficacy, Body Image concerns, and Mental Adjustment to cancer between pre and post the program. Conclusion:Self- Efficacy, Body Image and Mental Adjustment to cancer of post mastectomy women improved significantly after the program. Recommendation: Implementation of the psycho educational program post mastectomy to improve women’s use of appropriate coping strategies and to enhance their quality of life. |
