Abstract

Duplex stainless steels have always been an exciting area of interest for stainless steel producers, researchers, fabricators and end users. The main aim of this work is; to study the feasibility of friction stir welding for 5 mm thick Duplex Stainless Steel (DSS-2205) using tungsten carbide (WC) tool. This aim is also extended to investigate the effect of friction stir welding (FSW) parameters in terms of rotational speeds, travel speeds, and downward forces on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the welded joints.
Characterization for the welds in terms of macro and microstructures, hardness and tensile properties were done. The fracture surfaces resulting from tensile testing specimens were also investigated. Regarding the microstructural characterization, the elongated ferrite grains matrix and austenite islands has been significantly refined after FSW at all welding conditions. The friction stir welds shows an improvement of hardness value compared to the as-received materials.
The highest yield strength (645 MPa), and ultimate tensile strength (786 MPa) for DSS-2205 butt-joints are obtained at the welding condition of 300 rpm, 25 mm/min and 20 kN.
