Abstract

In the massive urban development of streets’ network in Egypt in the past years and till now, the urban neighborhoods lack the sustainable urban design of streets, Most of the current streets infrastructure was designed based on guidelines that emphasize vehicle mobility and safety and minimizing short-term upfront costs, with less consideration given to environmental aspects. The Aim of the thesis is applying the sustainable urban design of streets in Egypt and evaluates the sustainability using urban indicators and sustainability assessment tools as LEED-ND. The thesis studies one of the neighborhoods in Borg El Arab city to identify problems and potentials of the street design and assessing their sustainability qualitatively and quantitatively. The used Methodology basically relies on three approaches; the first is a theoretical analysis of the sustainability of streets, followed by he descriptive and comparative analytical approach method of LEED-ND credits related to street design categories and integrating them with the design of the street and then anticipates the performance of the assets under the credits also by analyzing sustainable streets examples in Egypt, Arabian cities and international examples. in the second part, thirdly the applied approach analysis by applying them to the gtfi neighborhood in New Borg EL Arab in Alexandria as a case study in the third part. The thesis consists of three parts: theoretical, analytical and practical, the theoretical. Part 1: discusses in chapter 1 the introduction of the thesis, chapter 2 discusses theoretical studies for sustainable streets design elements and principles and their assessment tools. Chapter 3 analyzes the LEED for neighborhood assessment tool categories related to streets design, Part 2: The Analytical studies discusses in chapter 1, international LEED -ND examples, chapter 2: discusses Egypt’ efforts in sustainability and projects examples and discusses Arabian cities efforts in sustainable neighborhoods in chapter 3. Part 3: chapter 1 discusses the history and analysis of the case study followed by the applications on the streets using LEED-ND credits in chapter 2. Finally come up with the final conclusion of Quantitative and qualitative results of assessing the gth Neighborhood in New Borg Al Arab using LEED-ND to show how many credits it achieved and the applicability to achieve more credits. Then provided in the last chapter recommendations for designing sustainable streets using LEED-ND to have a model for healthy certified sustainable livable streets which fulfill all the future sustainability requirements in Egypt by implementing sustainable development indicators to encourage engagement with the implementation in the urban design at a local level. Also by engaging specialist and non-specialist in participation that will have strong Effect on economic, social and environmental factors especially on the developing countries as Egypt.
