Abstract Acne vulgaris (AV) is a chronic inflammatory skin condition. Increase in sebum production, abnormal keratinization of the pilosebaceous follicle, Propionibacterium acnes (P.acnes) and an inflammatory immune response all are implicated in its etiology. Human beta defensin-3 (HβD3) is an antimicrobial peptide (AMP) expressed in the epidermis from the epidermal keratinocytes. HβD3 exhibited a strong antimicrobial activity against P.acnes and strengthened the skin’s physical barrier function, a decline of which gives leads to hyperproliferation and hyperkeratinizaon of epidermal keratinocytes, pathogenic factors in acne. |
