Abstract

Background: Data from the Egyptian National Hypertension Project (NHP) showed that hypertension is common among Egyptians. We studied the prevalence of hypertension, related risk factors and its complications in Fayoum governorate from 2015 to 2018.
Patients and Methods: This study included 2800 Egyptian participants aged 18 to 60 years old from Fayoum governorate selected by screening of district areas in Fayoum governorate and blood pressure had been measured for them.
Results: Prevalence of hypertension was (28.4%) (19.3% aware of their hypertension and 9.1% were unaware of their hypertension), 11% of study populations were pre-hypertensive and 59.9% of hypertensive patients were uncontrolled. 25.4% of hypertensive patients had positive family history of hypertension, 14.7% of hypertensive patients were smokers, majority of hypertensive patients were females 63.4% versus only 36.6% were males, 87.9% of hypertensive patients were overweight and obese, 80.8% of hypertensive patients have increase waist circumference. Also, 42% of known hypertensive patients had complications.
Conclusion and recommendations: Hypertension is prevalent among populations living in Fayoum governorate, risk factors incudes positive family history of hypertension, obesity and increased waist circumference. More researches are required to reveal reasons behind high prevalence and these low levels of control and awareness of hypertension, in order to put in the picture appropriate policy to improve the rate of control and quality of life of hypertensive patients in Egypt.
