Abstract SUMMARY In this study, type IIb&III, extension and flexion type supra- condylar fractures of humerus in children aged between 3 and 13 years, who were treated by closed reduction with either crossed pinning or lateral pinning. The cases were prospectively studied for functional outcome following the two types of pin placement. The range of age in our study was between 3-12 years with a mean age of 6.47 years. Boys (13cases) were more commonly affected (65% of cases) than girls (7cases) 35% of cases. The left side (12cases) was involved more than right side(8cases) by 60% of cases. Fall on an outstretched hand was the mode of injury in more than patients was by direct trauma to the elbow in flexion Type III was present in 95% (19cases) while type IIb was present in 5% (1cases). Posterior displacement of the distal fragment was present in (18cases) 90% of cases while anterior displacement involved in (2cases) 10% of cases. 10 cases (50% of cases) were treated with lateral pinning and 10 cases (50% of cases) were treated with crossed pinning. The average follow-up period was 3 months (range 2.8-3.2 months). No iatrogenic neurovascular injuries were found during the study. Following crossed pinning, excellent results were found in 90% of cases and good results in 10% of cases. There were 90% excellent and 10% good results in cases treated with lateral pinning. The difference in the functional and cosmetic outcome between the two groups was not statistically significant. |
