Abstract

”And we caused to grow, over him, a spreading plant of the gourd kind”. (Chapter 37 As-Saaffat: Verse 147).
Yaqtin [Lagenaria siceraria (Molina) Standley (Family Cucurbitaceae)] covering views of Islamic Scholars and folk medicinal uses. The word Yaqtin has been mentioned once in the holy Qur’an in one sura, As-Saaffat, with Reference to Prophet Yuns (Jonah) Alaissalam. Almost all the Islamic Scholars have interpreted Yaqtin in the meaning of creeping plant or gourd
(L. siceraria) in their commentaries (Tafaseer) on the Holy Qur’an.
The gourd is one of the excellent fruits gifted by God to human beings having composition of all the essential constituents that are required for good health. Its various parts have been widely used in traditional medicine.
The current study was outlined to look into the cardioprotective & hepatoprotective effect of the Lagenaria siceraria seeds oil against Doxorubicine induced cardoitoxicity and Carbon tetrachloride induced hepatotoxicity in rats.
Experimental design:
First experiment:
In this experiment twenty-eight adult male albino rats 180-200 gm average body weight were divided randomly into four equal groups:
- First group was left as a control group.
- Second group was injected i.p by doxorubicin (10mg/kg b.w) daily for 18 day into (Doxo. group).
- Third group was injected by Doxorubicin with same dose i.p to (Doxo. + LSSO group) followed by oral administration of Lagenaria siceraria seeds oil 300 ml/100 gm b.wt daily for 18 day.
- Forth group was administrated Lagenaria siceraria seeds oil 300 mg/100 gm orally daily for 18 day to (Oil group).
Blood sample were collected on 19th day for estimation of AST, LDH, CK-MB, troponine and antioxidant.
Hearts of differents groups were taken on formalin 20% for investigation of histopathological changes.
The results weresummarized as follows:
1. The highest level of AST was associated with the toxicities by doxorubicin. Whilst, the minimum level of AST was found in the control group followed by the treatment with L.S.S. Oil.
2. The maximum level of LDH was found in DOX. group comparied with other groups. Co- administration of L.S.S. Oil with DOX. reduced LDH concentration.
3. The highest level of troponin 1 was recorded in DOX. group followed by DOX. + L.S.S. Oil then control group since the lowest level was detected in L.S.S. Oil group.
4. No significant differences were found between the experimental groups regarding heart ck-MB.
5. It is noticeable that Doxorubicin injection gave the worst values of catalase, MDA and GSH. The opposite was found in Lagenaria siceraria seeds oil treated group.
6. The interaction between doxorubicin and Lagenaria seeds oil resulted in intermediate level of catalase, MDA and GSH.
7. The cardio protective effect of L.SS oil against DOX. was confirmed by histopathological studies.
