Abstract

Rheumatoid arthritis is one of the worldwide inflammatory form arthritis that was first described in the mid-nineteenth century.
Antimalarials are used commonly as non biologic Disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs). their known toxic retinal effect is the reason of worry of physicians and ophthalmologists and efforts for its screening and preclinical detection.
In the review of literature, Hydroxychloroquine is the most commonly used from antimalarials and It’s proved that they have many ocular side effects and retinopathy is the most serouis that make studies focusing on early monitoring of hydroxycholorquine retinopathy to detect it when it’s still reversible.
This compartive study aimed to detect the possibility of using SD-OCT as screening tools of patients taking Hydroxychloroquine for treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. The patients underwent full ophthalmological examination, colour vision by Ishihara Pseudoisochromatic plates and SD-OCT scanning.
Outer retinal thinning in the form of foveal and parafoveal thinning occurred in rheumatoid patients treated with Hydroxychloroquine compared to the control group. Colour vision was affected but wasn’t significant statistically, so can be used as a complementary and not a routine test for screening.
The conclusion of the study states that SD-OCT is an effective tool for screening of preclinical Hydroxychloroquine retinopathy.
