Abstract This research aims to study the feasibility of producing low permeability concrete using bentonite. A comparison between concrete mixes with bentonite and the mixes with a chemical waterproofing admixture to reduce permeability of concrete with Ligno-sulphonates base (CWA) was investigated. The impact resistance of these types of concrete was investigated. Two types of coarse aggregate (dolomite and gravel) were used. Bentonite with percent 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 10, 15 and 20 % as a replacement of cement by weight was used. CWA with percent 0, 0.25, 0.5, 1 and 2 % of cement by weight was used. The mechanical properties of the mixes (compressive, tensile and flexural strength) and the impact resistance test were evaluated. Also, the permeability coefficient for the different mixes was calculated. The results showed that; using 5% of bentonite as a percent of bentonite is the optimum value to produce low permeability concrete. As a result of this research, it is suggested to use this type of concrete with bentointe as water stop for joints in concrete structures, protective materials for sealing by mixing underlying soils at the construction fields, self-healing ability, water purification and structures which exposed to impact loads. |
