Abstract Survival of the newborns who are admitted to the NICUs do not depend exclusively on birth weight and gestational age, but also on other perinatal factors and physiological conditions of the individual infants, in particular severity of their disease.Different tools for assessing and predicting mortality risk among neonates have been developed to overcome the problems imposed by the difference in birth weight, varied causes of neonatal mortality, varied pattern of care given at the neonatal units, and other risk factors predispose to neonatal mortality.Neonatal risk mortality scores have been used for more than 20 years in NICUs. They were created using perinatal and laboratory data shortly after admission to assess the individual neonatal mortality risk. Models that predict risk of death in intensive care, evaluation of quality of care and comparison of outcomes between NICUs.Advantageous features of a neonatal scoring system include the following:(1) Ease of use(2) Applicability early in the course of hospitalization(3) Ability to reproducibly predict mortality, specific morbidities, or cost for various categories of neonates.(4) Usefulness for all groups of neonates to be described. |
