Abstract The presented thesis focuses on assessing the water quality of the first part of the canal. This study presents the detailed biological and physico-chemical analyses needed for the water quality study. The preformed analyses prioritized the hydrophyte and their epiphytic microalgae as the biological indicators. Obvious seasonal and spatial differences were recorded. The investigated parameters showed higher levels of chemicals at downstream stream of the canal, especially at stations that receives wastewater from El Serw and Hadous drains. The hydrophyte species distribution and composition along the study area highlighted the hydrophytes as good bioindictors for water quality. The heavy metals concentrations in the hydrophyte samples showed great spatial and seasonal variations. The results indicated substantially higher heavy metal content of biomass of all hydrophytes compared to that of water. This finding may have indicated that the hydrophytes recorded in this study are good accumulator of heavy metals and may play important role in metal bioremediation. The data indicated substantial differences in biovolumes of epiphytic microalgae that were largely dependent on season, plant species and sampling sites. Marked variations in number of different species were dependent on spatial, seasonal and plant species variations. The study highlighted hydrophytes and pollution as factors affecting the dominance of epiphytic phyla. The succession of epiphytic microalgae can be greatly affected by the different sensitivity of different algae groups and different species of one group to allelopathic effects of hydrophytes. The results of biological indices are supported by that of WQI, that indicate moderate pollution of the study area. |
