Abstract

Cantilevers having shear span to depth ratio less than or equal to one are termed as brackets,
corbels, or short cantilevers. Since there is a growing interest m building construction to . use
precast concrete elements, short cantilevers became very popular. Short cantilevers may transmit
axial loads , moments , shear and torsion, (either singly orin combination), resulting from dead
and live loads , earthquake and wind loads , handling and erection stresses
, shrinkage and . creep of concrete and certain other loads resulting from
construction and erection procedures.
Little information is available in the literature on the behavior or reinforced concrete corbels
under the effect of eccentric loading.
In this research an experimental , and theoretical investigation was performed to study the general
deforma:tion behavior of doubly symmetrically loaded reinforced concrete corbels. Four
parameters were varied in the study namely,
compressive concrete strength , breadth of corbels , height at corbel end , and presence of
vertical stirrups.
A theoretical model using finite element method is presented for predicting the general
deformational behavior , cracking and failure loads. Comparison was made between experimental
test results and those obtained theoretically .
Finally the results of experimental , and theoretical studies were combined with available
information to formulate some recommendations on how to design reinforced concrete corbels.
