Abstract

Incisional hernia after laparotomy is a significant clinical problem that affects
quality of life and has high socioeconomic burden for repair.
Mesh repair today is undoubtedly the gold standard treatment. Since 1992,
the laparoscopic approach has been increasingly used for incisional hernia
repair. The goal when introducing laparoscopic incisional hernia repair was to
reduce surgical trauma and thereby decrease postoperative pain and shorten
the time to full recovery.
The purpose of this study was to compare between open and laparoscopic
repair regarding technique and outcome. for this purpose 100 patient with
incisional hernia were randomly distributed between group for open repair and
second group for laparoscopic repair.
Results were collected and analyzed and showed points that have statistical
difference between the two groups. Operative time showed difference between
both groups as it was shorter in the open group. Post-operative hospital stay
was shorter in the laparoscopic group. Superficial wound infection was less in
the laparoscopic repair group. Acute post-operative pain score was less in the
laparoscopic group.
