Abstract

The use of FRP sheets is becoming more popular due to their high strength-to-weight ratio, durability in adverse environments, high fatigue strength, ease of handling and application, elimination of false work and heavy equipment, faster construction rate, and non-corrosiveness. Wrapping of concrete column using Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) sheets can significantly improve their structural behavior.
There is no doubt that complete reorganization about the behavior of rectangular concrete columns confined with FRP sheet is very important to reach to design recommendations for predicting the axial compressive strength values of the strengthened columns. So, in this thesis a constructive critical review was conducted including all confinement parameters and their effect on strength, ductility and modes of columns failure. Then an experimental work was conducted focusing on Predicting recent axial compressive strength values of the rectangular reinforced concrete columns confined with FRP sheets. Besides that a limited investigation on the behavior of rectangular RC columns by using a new fiber material (Basalt) and a limited comparison between fully and partially wrapped columns with a commonly fiber type (Carbon) were conducted. After that based on the test results regarding FRP-confined rectangular RC columns available in the literature and the experimental work, some existing confinement models for rectangular RC columns were assessed and a modification in ACI (2008) model to take the partial wrapping configuration in account was developed through regression analysis of the database. The proposed modification was found to be in good agreement with the test results in the database. Finally conclusions present a guideline for the case of rectangular FRP-confined RC columns and indicate a direction for future researches and developments.
