Abstract 1. Egyptian hybrid1 cultivar surpassed Giza 178 in most of yield traits. 2. The highest performance of both cultivars was obtained at the rate of 92 kg N/fed., followed by 69 kg N/fed. 3. Application of potassium silicate (500 kg/fed.) or compost straw (2.1 t/fed.) combined with 92 or 69 kg N/fed. resulted in the highest values of yield and its attributes, as well as grain quality. 4. Stem borer infestation gradually increased with the increase of nitrogen fertilization. 5. Stem borer infestation significantly decreased with any of silica source. 6. Egyptian hybrid1 stems had higher silica and nitrogen than Giza 178 stems. 7. Stem silica contents, in both cultivars, were higher at 69 kg than at 92 kg N/fed. |
