Abstract Global increase in population has increased the pressure on available sources of energy. As fossil fuels are non-renewable and environmental harmful sources, a major goal of energy research are to find alternative, sustainable and environmentally friendly sources of energy. Microalgae are widely recognized as a promising feedstock for biofuel production. For large-scale production of biodiesel, selection and cultivation of algal species is important steps to reduce cost and time. The most important desirable characteristics in a species selection to be used for biodiesel production are high biomass and lipid production. Quantitative and qualitative lipid and fatty acid compositions of selected algal species are regarded to be critical parameters. |
