Abstract The aim of this search is to study the role of phytoplankton in biodegradation (biosorption and/ or bioaccumulation) and as bioindicator for pollutants in Lake Manzala. Samples were collected from 14 sites, including 5 drains and their estuaries, two sites within the lake and two Boghaz over four seasons, 2014-2015. 2. Physico-chemical analysis were conducted for the collected water samples, to determine the water quality, which showed, for example, the high values of transparency, pH, electrical conductivity, salinity, total salts, carbonate and dissolved oxygen in the Boghaz sites rather than the rest of the sites. The areas of El-Ginka, El-Boom and Hadous drain showed increasing concentrations of bicarbonate followed by the rest of the drains and little concentrations in the Boghaz sites. 3. Drains, especially Old and New Bahr El-Baqar drains, also contain high concentrations of ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, phosphate and silicate, |
