Abstract

The question of media bias in the coverage of certain events, especiallynewspapers, has been widely debated in the field of critical discourse analysis (Van Dijk (1984, 1987, 1991, 1993a, 2007), Richardson (2004), van Leeuwen (1998, 2008),Fairclough ( 1989, 1992, 1995, 2003, 2005), Wodak (1986, 1996a, 1996b, 2001, 2006, 2008) and Reisgil (2007). This study attempts to explore the (un)bias of the selected British and Egyptian newspapers, namely Al Ahram, Al Gomhuria, Al Masry Alyoum from Egypt, and The Guardian, The Times and The Independent as representatives for the British newspapers, in covering the events of the Egyptian 25th, January Revolution 2011. In this study, I will examine the news related to the events in the Egyptian arena in the period from 25th January up to 12th February 2011 in order to investigate the language used by the selected British and Egyptian newspapers in representing President Mubarak and his government on the one hand, and the protesters on the other.
