Abstract A first in country trial of detection, isolation, identification and characterization of foot and mouth disease virus (FMDV) strains was conducted in Qatar during the year 2015-2016. Using rRT-PCR and RT-PCR assay, of subject animals (25/131) were found positive for infection with foot and mouth disease virus (FMD) throughout the investigation period. Serotyping of the detected FMDV through identification and characterization of distinguished three FMDV serotypes namely, O, A, and Asia 1. Five domesticated and wild ungulate animal species, namely cattle, sheep, goat, gazelle and Oryx were shown infected with these serotypes. Interesting enough, mixed FMDV serotype infections were demonstrated into 4 susceptible animals representing 3 different species. While best to our knowledge it is the first time identifying three different FMDV serotypes in Qatar, Sequence investigations and the phylogenic analysis have related the Qatari samples to the central/east O, A and Asia 1 isolates countries. Determination of the molecular epidemiology of the positive samples might hint the nature of the expectant future vaccine strains needed to control FMD in Qatar. |
