Abstract Citrus fruits (as orange and lemon) are considered as food crops with economic importance. The rind is considered as an industrial waste for these fruits. Also, agricultural waste from the leaves and small stems that produced during the annual clipping of trees process. These wastes are of economic importance, if properly utilized, as they contain volatile oils with a distinctive odor that can be used in pharmaceutical preparations, cosmetics, food industry and perfumes. Numerous scientific papers have been published that discuss the chemical content of these plants, such as flavonoids, limonoids, coumarins, sterols, alkaloids, vitamins (specially vitamin C) and pro-vitamin A (carotenoid), which showed its high biological effectiveness as: strengthen the capillaries, antioxidants, anti-inflammatory, cytotoxic activities and treatment of obesity and abdominal cramps …... etc This study comprises a phytochemical and biological study of two plants from genus citrus grown in Egypt to maximize the utilization of these wastes. The plant names: Citrus x limon cultivar Variegated pink lemon. Citrus reticulata cultivar Murcott. The aim of this work is: 1. Isolation and characterization of secondary metabolites from different fractions of plant organs. 2. Identification of secondary metabolites using high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry analysis (HPLC-PDA-ESI-MS/MS). 3. Determination of total phenolics and total flavonoids contents in different hydro-alcoholic extracts and fractions of different parts of the plants.4. Study of the volatile constituents of the different parts of Murcott mandarin as Egyptian variety was not analyzed before using gas liquid chromatography/ mass spectrometry. 5. Evaluation of biological activity of different extracts and fractions from the provided plants including anti-oxidant and antimicrobial activities of two studied plants, in addition to cytotoxic activity of volatile constituents of Murcott mandarin against some human tumor cell lines. 6. Study of DNA fingerprinting for two plants using Random andom andom andom andom Amplifiemplifiemplifiemplifiemplifiemplifiemplified Polymorphic olymorphic olymorphic olymorphic olymorphic olymorphic olymorphic olymorphic olymorphic DNA (RAPD) technique. The study is divided into four main parts preceded by introduction, and the most common chemical and biological characters of genus citrus. |
