Abstract

Introduction: Extrinsic aging may occur even before intrinsic aging by many factors especially ultraviolet irradiation. Lycopene as a potent antioxidant might protect skin from damage caused by UV irradiation.
Aim of the work: This study was designed to evaluate the effect of lycopene on photoaging of skin induced by sun exposure in adult male guinea pigs in Cairo, Egypt.
Materials and Methods: Forty adult male guinea pigs weighing 300-400 g were divided into three groups. group I control group. group II sun exposed group. group III lycopene treated group, lycopene was given orally in concomitant with sun exposure. Specimens were collected from back skin and processed for light and electron microscope. Sections for light microscope were stained by H&E, Mallory, orcein and immunohistochemical for tyrosinase enzyme. Morphometrical and statistical studies were done.
Results: Sun exposure produced a significant decrease in total epidermal thickness, disorganization in different strata of keratinocyte with widening of the intercellular spaces, an apparent increase in the basophilic granules of stratum granulosum together with increase thickness of horny layer. There was also a significant increase in area percentage of tyrosinase positive reaction, decrease area percentage of collagen and elastic fibers as compared to the control group. Collagen fibers appeared fragmented, disorganized with wide spaces in between fibers. Lycopene administration could ameliorate all of the histological changes induced by sun exposure.

Conclusion: It was concluded that lycopene could protect against the photoaging of skin induced by sun exposure in adult male guinea pigs in Cairo, Egypt.
