Abstract This study attempts to explore messages of solid. arity and political discourse features of two presidential speeches given by two former Egyptian presidents namely; Hosni Mubarak and Mohamed Morsi in the wake of the January Revolution. van Dijk’s (2006) strategy of self and other-presentation is applied as a theoretical framework for a qualitative linguistic analysis of this study; the contextual strategy of positive self-presentation (PSP), positive other-presentation (POP) and negative other-presentation (NOP) is extensively relied on to clarify different social representations. The study aims at answering three questions: (1) what linguistic features and tools did both presidents utilize in their speeches in order to convey their messages of solidarity? (2) How do the features of positive. - self-presentation (PSP), positive other-presentation (POP) and negative other-presentations (NOP) appear in the speeches of Mubarak and Morsi? (3) How can language be used to exclude/marginalize members of the same society in the selected political speeches? Results reveal that the linguistic features analyzed in this study serve the speakers’ political goals; both speakers utilized lexis, deixis and some syntactic and rhetoric features to convey their messages of solidarity. Second, the features of positive self-presentation (PSP), positive other-presentation (POP) and negative other-presentations (NOP) appeared vividly in the speeches of Mubarak and Morsi on four different levels: lexical, pragmatics, syntax and rhetoric. Finally, both speakers utilized deixis, demonstratives and NOP strategy to exclude/marginalize members of the same society in the mentioned political speeches. |
