Abstract The present study aimed to investigate hepatotoxicity induced by Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and evaluate the potential effects of both Alpha lipoic acid (ALA) and vitamin E as antioxidants against LPS intoxication. (160) albino rats were divided into eight groups, control group, injected intraperitoneally (i.p) with saline solution. ALA group, treated orally with ALA (60 mg/kg). Vitamin E group, treated orally with vitamin E (40 mg /kg) twice a week. ALA& vitamin E group, treated orally with both ALA (60 mg/kg) and vitamin E (40 mg /kg). LPS group, injected (i.p) with a single dose of LPS (1mg/kg). ALA&LPS group, pre-treated orally with ALA then, intoxicated with LPS. Vitamin E&LPS group, pre-treated orally with vitamin E, then, intoxicated with LPS. ALA& vitamin E & LPS group, treated orally with ALA and vitamin E, then, intoxicated with LPS. All rats were sacrificed after one month at (2, 4, 6 and 24 hours) after the last administered doses. The results showed that LPS significantly increased levels of (TNF-α, IL-6, IL-10), ALT, AST, GGT, ALP, TC, TG and MDA while, GSH and CAT activity decreased. Also, histopathological alterations were induced by LPS. ALA, vitamin E and their combination significantly ameliorated the all previous studied parameters. |
