Abstract The present investigation was carried out to study the biological activity of Ficus carica leaves aqueous extract (FCLAE) on some germination and growth parameters (germination bioassay experiment). In addition, some physiological, biochemical and molecular parameters (growth bioassay experiment) were evaluated under the stress of Ficus carica leaves crude powder (FCLCP). One leafy vegetable species, Raphanus sativus and two crop species; Triticum aestivum and Vicia fabawere selected to achieve the present study. Some growth parameters in R. sativus were gradually reduced with the increase in extract concentration. On the other hand, T. aestivum and V. faba achieved promotion for their growth with increasing concentration only under low concentration levels. RL and CL of T. aestivum at (1%) and V. faba at (3%) were stimulated at low concentration levels of FCLAE an advantage for enhancement the drought tolerance of the abovementioned crops. Lower concentration level (1%) of FCLCP exhibited a stimulation effect in all growth parameters in R. sativus, while gradual inhibition occurred in T. aestivum for all growth parameters except shoot length (SHL) and shoot (SWC) and (RWC) water content. Obviously, V. faba was more sensitive compared to other species. Hydrogen peroxide and malondialdehyde exhibited stimulation effect at 5% concentration level in both shoot (SH) and root (RT) at all studied recipient species, while catalase and polyphenoloxidase showed stimulation effect at 3% concentration level in both shoot (SH) and root (RT) inall studied species. Allelochemicals extracted from F. carica significantly interfered with the protein expression of T. aestivum, V. faba and R. sativus either by induction or repression. R. sativus seedling achieved the highest percentage of genomic template stability (82%, 59% and 53%) at 1, 3 and 5% FCLCP respectively. Interestingly, the study recommended the planting R. sativus as intercrop in F. carica orchards. |
