Abstract Objective: to study the effect of Levetiracetam and Topiramate on the oral health of epileptic children. Study design: cross sectional study randomized controlled trial. Study setting: Ain Shams University hospital. Patients: 60 patients were recruited in this study and they were divided into two equal groups, first group was taking Levetiracetam drug and the second was taking Topiramate drug. Results: patients on Levetiracetam suffered from gingival inflammation significantly more than the Topiramate group by using gingival index as p value was 0.003. we found according to def index that patients on Topiramate suffered high significantly more than those on levetiracetam group more than other groups where the mean of def index was 2 (2 – 3) while in levetiracetam group the mean was 2 (1 - 2). In DMF index the mean of levetiracetam group was 2 (0 – 4) while in Topiramate group was 2 (1 – 4), the pvalue was 0.234.This indicates that their was no significant difference between the two groups in dental caries of the permenant teeth. In a comparison between the Levetiracetam and Topiramate in gingival enlargement by using the gingival enlargement index we found that there was no significant difference between them as the p value was 0.194.conclusion: There is an increase incidence of occurring dental plaque formation and dental caries in patients taking antiepileptic drugs as Levetiracetam and Topiramate and with decreased dental hygiene, also there is increase incidence of occurring gingival enlargement and gingival inflammation in these patients. |
