Abstract

Friedel‟s salt (3CaO·Al2O3·CaCl2·10H2O), known as chloride
hydrocalumite is an anion exchanger mineral belong to the family
of the layered double hydroxides (LDHs) and is a stable hydration
product of cement/concrete subjected to sea water or other chemical
aggressive attacks, so this salt can be easily and cheaply prepared .
Friedel′s salt is a (LDHs) widely used in adsorption of harmful
anions and cations such as arsenate, chromium, silicate, phosphate
and cadmium by its ion exchange characteristic.
The aim of this work is to investigate the adsorption behavior of
the Friedel’s salt in aqueous solutions toward Cu+2 and Ni+2 ions at
different pHs values, and the mechanism of metal ion adsorption
are also studied.
The main points that could be derived from this study are
summarized in the following:-
1- The stability and solubility of Friedel’s salt is affected by pH.
2- The stability of F.S. in solutions is changed according to pHs
of the solutions, the higher stability at pH=6 and lower
stability at pH= (4 and 8).
3- There are adsorption properties of F.S. toward cations, such
as Cu+2 and Ni+2 ions in solutions and there properties depend
on pHs and concentration of cations.4- Friedel’s salt adsorb all copper ions from the solution at
pH = 4, when total copper concentration in solution
=0.5mM/l rather than for 3mM/ and 8mM/l copper
concentrations.
5- Friedel’s’ salt adsorb all Ni+2 ions from the solution in the
pores on its surface at pH= (4 and 6), when total Ni+2 ions
concentration in solution = 0.1mM/l.
