Abstract Introduction: Ocular injury is one of the major causes of visual impairment. The severity of the trauma is directly proportional to morbidity and socioeconomic loss. Aim of the work: The aim of this work is to provide data about causes and nature of ocular trauma and find the relationship of these causes to age and gender. Patients and methods: This study included 200 patients with ocular injury who presented to both the outpatient clinic of Mansoura Ophthalmic Center and Alsinbelaween Ophthalmic Section during the period from August 2014 to April 2016. Results: After history taking, all of patients were subjected to full ophthalmic examination including visual acuity measurement, Slit-lamp examination. Direct comparison of this study with the data from some of the studies reviewed was difficult in some aspects, due to different classification, definition and methods of reporting used in these studies. However, it is possible to conclude from this study that delay in presentation, has a significant association with presence of complications which may have a detrimental visual outcome. Summary: Ocular trauma in Egypt is a major problem, accounting for the majority of cases of unilateral blindness. However, eye trauma and its subsequent visual disability are for the most part avoidable. |
