Abstract

Antimicrobial resistance of MRSA became on the top of the serious problems that have a negative impact on public health. Recently, the wide spread of antibiotic resistance stimulates studies to search for new methods on treatment with plant extracts and essential oils. The number of studies on the use of essential oils against multidrug-resistant bacteria has been increasing and has shown the high potential of essential oils to control a large number of pathogen. Therefore, the main objective of this study was to extend the research to evaluate the antibacterial activities of some essential oils and their purified extracts on physiological characters of S. aureus in addition to assessing the impact of their sub-inhibitory concentrations on the transcriptional modulation of S. aureus cell wall genes. Out of 155 samples collected from different sources, 51 staphylococcal isolates (34 S. aureus and 17 coagulase negative staphylococci) were recovered. Antibiotic susceptibility testing of S. aureus isolates revealed that majority of isolates were MRSA with the highest sensitivity rate against vancomycin (100%) and marked resistance patterns against β- lactam antibiotics. It is worth noting that 97.6% of S. aureus isolates demonstrated a pronounced MDR pattern, being resistant to more than 3 antibiotics of different classes. The in vitro antibacterial effects of the used essential oils and their purified extracts revealed that clove, oregano and thyme essential oils.
