Abstract In this thesis, a DC-DC modified boost converter with a higher voltage gain is presented. Similar to the conventional DC-DC boost converter, the proposed converter includes only a single power electronic switch without the need for any extra electronic switches. Therefore, a compact size and less complexity can be achieved. Steady – state operation of the proposed converter is analyzed as well as its principle of operation is discussed. Also, simulations of the conventional as well as the modified converters, using MATLAB SIMULINK, are carried out considering different loads either static (resistive and inductive) or dynamic (universal motor load). The ability of the proposed converter to achieve higher voltage gain as compared to the conventional one is experimentally validated using prototypes for both conventional and proposed converter designs. Considering the attractive characteristics of Universal motor as an important motor that can develop a large amount of starting torque. The present thesis introduces a closed loop speed control system of this motor when fed from conventional as well as the modified boost converters. The performance of the speed control system considering the two converter types is theoretically studied using MATLAB/SIMULINK program. Finally, an experimental evaluation for the system is carried out using the designed converters prototypes, DC motor, and a DSP board to control the motor speed. |
