Abstract

Family planning (FP) is now acknowledged as one of the most
successful development interventions, with potential benefits on maternal
and child health outcomes, educational advances and economic
development.
The benefits of family planning and birth spacing reach beyond the
individual level for women and their families, women who can plan the
number and timing of the birth of their children enjoy improved health,
experience fewer unplanned pregnancies and births and are less likely to
have an abortion.
Family planning counselling is interaction between clients and
providers who serve them, treat all clients respectfully, responds to their
reproductive needs and intentions, help in the selection of the most
appropriate family planning method.
The aim of this study was to assess and improve quality of family
planning counseling sessions and to assess clients’ satisfaction with
family planning counseling sessions.
This study was carried out in all family health facilities (no=15), in
Sadat city district, Menoufia governorate. It included all family planning
services providers in the studied family health facilities (45) and two
hundred clients who were randomly selected from attendants to the
studied family health facilities. Data from health care providers were
collected using a check list using Balanced Counseling Strategy BCS
stages according USAID user’s guide and self-reported questionnaire to
assess the qualification of providers in providing family planning
counseling and services. Data from clients to assess their knowledge and satisfaction with services related to contraception and sessions were
collected using a semi-structured questionnaire.
from this study it was found that:
The total number of family planning providers was 45(physicians were 21
(46.7%)& nurses were 24 (53.3%).Regarding duration of physicians
experience in FP most of physicians (71.4%) had an experience less than
five years, most of the interviewed nurses(58.3%) had an experience
more than 10 years.
Almost all family planning providers had previous family planning
training courses. However 100 % of nurses versus 38.1% of physicians
received training courses about counseling.
Check list gave better scores for nurses than for physicians in providing
counseling sessions for clients.
Regarding knowledge of studied clients about contraceptive methods,
most clients got knowledge from family health facilities, nearly all clients
hear about Loop, Contraceptive pills, injections & lactational
amenorrhea, 73.5% hear about sub dermal implants, 56.5%hear about
male barrier, 40% hear about coitus interrupts, 61% hear about surgical
contraception, only 12% hear about female barrier, 10.5% hear about safe
doirep and only7.5% hear about emergency contraception.
Only 1% of wives & 3% of husbands had negative attitude about F P.
About 25% of the studied clients used IUD, 30.5 % used combined pills,
17% used mini pills, 5% used combined injection, 20.5% used Depovera
injection, 2% used condom and 0.5% used Implanon.
