Abstract Female genital prolapse refers to the abnormal descent or herniation of the pelvic organs from their original attachment sites or their normal position in the pelvis and protrude into or outside of the vaginal canal (Susan, 2007). The aim of the current study was to determine women’s awareness and identify their reactions to symptoms of genital prolapse. The design A descriptive study was used to the present study. The sample was non probability (purposive sample). The total sample size 60 cases according to the study criteria. Tools of this study included an interview questionnaire form and Self-administration questionnaire. The Results The present study revealed that the majority of women gained poor total score of knowledge about genital prolapse and they were more likely to perform non-scientific, unsound reactions to its symptoms. It was obvious that a variety of factors had a significant effect on women’s knowledge about genital prolapse and their reactions to its symptoms. Among these factors were education, age, shyness from doctor and parity. Concluded that several risk factors were found to be associated with genital prolapse such as consequent pregnancies, lack of antenatal follow up, multiple pregnancy, high parity, home delivery attended by midwifes, prolonged laber, bearing down during the first stage of laber and using of fundal pressure during delivery. Early resumption of household activities, carrying heavy objects and lake of practicing pelvic floor exercises during puerperium as well as history of medical diseases. Therefore, it is recommended Refreshing courses, preservice and in-service training programs, especially for newly appointed obstetric nurses, are needed to provide them with essential knowledge and skills regarding early detection and referral of women who are at high – risk for genital prolapse Health education programs for women should be designed taking into account women’s different socioeconomic and literacy level. |
