Abstract Biochemical effect of exogenous administration of some natural hypocholesterolemic agents, chitosan and wheat germ oil, in normal and high cholesterol diet induced hypercholesterolemia as a model of atherosclerosis in male rats were investigated. Seventy two male albino rats, 6-8 weeks old and average body weight 150-180 gm were used in the experimental investigation of this study. Animals were housed in separate metal cages, fresh and clean drinking water was supplied ad-libitum. Rats were kept at constant environmental and nutritional conditions throughout the period of experiment. The animals were left 14 days for acclimatization before the beginning of the experiment. Hypocholesterolemic agents and chemicals:The natural hypocholesterolemic agents and chemicals used in the present study were: a- Chitosan: Chitosan was added to the basal diet at a dose 5% (1kg diet/50gm Chitosan). b- Wheat germ oil: Wheat germ oil was administrated orally and daily to rats at a dose level of 270 mg/kg b.wt/day. c- Chemicals: A mixture of cholesterol, cholic acid and standard laboratory diet for rats had been administered to each rat per day for 8 weeks. |
