Abstract Legumes, members of the family Fabaceae (Leguminosae) are the third largest flowering plant family following orchids (Orchidaceae) and daisies (Asteraceae or Compositae). The high economic importance of the genus Vicia has led to a large body of studies on the molecularcharacterization and investigation of phylogeneticrelationships among species that belonged to thisgenus. The genus Vicia L is widely distributed along several regions of North and South America, Europe, Asiaand the Mediterranean area. The latter is the principal centre of distribution and diversification where polymorphism has been associated with geographical origin of germplasm. |
