Abstract This research represents a laboratory study of the effect of the aggregate characteristics on HMA. These characteristics such as aggregate type, shape, gradation, aggregate surface texture. The aggregate shapes considered for this study were cubical, disk and blade shapes. The aggregate types used were crushed gravel, crushed limestone and basalt. Two aggregate surface textures used, which be smooth and rough particles. Three aggregate gradations used were coarse gradation, medium gradation and fine gradation. Shape of aggregate was determined through two methods. The first method was an image measurement of coarse aggregate while the second was particle shape index. Marshall Test and indirect tensile test were performed to investigate the different in behaviors of samples in this study. The results showed that using of cubical aggregate shape increased each of Marshall Stability, density and ITS while decreased the flow and air voids of the mix than other shapes. |
