Abstract

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of irreversible visual impairment and blindness in the elderly population.
The development of AMD is a slow progressive process that occurs with aging and mainly affects people over age 60.
AMD conventionally is divided into two main types dry (non-exudative) AMD and wet (exudative) AMD. And by The International Age-Related Maculopathy Epidemiological Study group is divided into two main types early AMD and advanced AMD.
Classification of areas of increased fundus autofluorescence in the junctional zone of geographic atrophy in patients with age related macular degeneration according to the FAF in ARMD study (FAM) into (none, focal, patchy, banded, and diffuse pattern).
Classification of areas of decreased fundus autofluorescence in the junctional zone of geographic atrophy and else where in patients with age related macular degeneration according to:
 Size: measured by disc diameter.
 Shape: oval, circular and irregular.
 Edge: well or ill defined.
 Number of foci: uni or multifocal.
The current study was conducted on 30 eyes of patients aged 54 - 87 years old all having atrophic type of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). With aiming to study the changes in the retinal layers within the vicinity of atrophic lesions in patients with geographic atrophy secondry.
