Abstract Analysis of traffic performance on roads intersections is one of the most important scientific research approaches in the field of traffic engineering. Recently, the majority of traffic specialists use different traffic simulation softwares to determine the level service on road links and intersections. There are many traffic operation softwares which are used to simulate and evaluate the traffic operation process. These softwares use the HCM methodology as a base in their analysis. Three software packages were selected to be investigated in this study; they included SYNCHRO 7, HCS2000 and SIDRA INTERSECTION 5.1. By analyzing the outputs of them, it was noticed that there were great differences between their results when they were used in evaluating the same case study. The main objective of this study is to investigate the main causes of these differences as well as defining one of these softwares to be the most representative of traffic movement on the road links and intersections and develop it. To achieve this goal, three classes of road intersections were slected; the first class included three major signalized intersections in Zagazig city. The second class included two unsignalized intersections in Tenth of Ramadan city, while the third class included a roundabout intersection at Tenth of Ram ad an city. The analysis of results included four main subjects; the first subject included a comparison between different investigated softwares outputs and HCM methodology to identify the more applicable software to HCM. The second subject included a comparison between delay times measured from the field and the corresponding delay times determined using the selected softwares. The third subject included calibrating the selected softwares to adjust their outputs to be applicable to the local conditions. Finally, evaluation to real delay times at various study cases and their corresponding values determined |
