Abstract

The present study was undertaken to investigate the protective effect of tomato seed soil (TSO) against whole body gamma irradiation induced damage in male rats. Exposure of animals to gamma radiation induced hepatic, renal and testicular damage and oxidative stress as well as systemic inflammation and altered serum lipid homeostasis, with respect to intact animals. Oral administration of TSO (1 ml/kg bw; 3 times/week for 8 weeks) before exposure to gamma radiation protected rats from the damaging effects of gamma irradiation as revealed by the normalization of serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) activity, urea and creatinine concentrations, sorbitol dehydrogenase (SDH) and vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) levels, as well as serum triacylglycerols (TAG), high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and very low density lipoprotein cholesterol (VLDL-C), and significant reductions of serum aspartate aminotransferase (AST) activity, total testosterone, cholesterol and low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) concentrations, with respect to gamma-irradiated rats. Histopathological findings of hepatic, renal and testicular tissues verified biochemical data. The radioprotective ability of TSO was attributed to its content of antioxidants,

including lycopene, β-carotene, lutein, α- and γ-tocopherols, vitamins and phytosterols. In conclusion, this study demonstrated that TSO is a promising radioprotective agent that can be effectively used to protect the body from the damaging effects of gamma radiation, especially for cancer patients that receive radiotherapy and workers in the field of radiation.
