Abstract Organophosphorus compounds are the most commonly used pesticides globally to control pests due to their easy availability. Organophosphorus poisoning by unintentional or suicidal ingestion is associated with high morbidity and mortality. In Egypt, OPP represents more than 50% of insecticide poisoned patients. The main toxic mechanism of OPCS is inhibition of AChE enzyme at muscarinic and nicotinic synapses. This results in accumulation of ACh and overstimulation of cholinergic synapses in the CNS, somatic nerves, parasympathetic nerve endings, and sweat glands. |
