Abstract

The aim of this work is to evaluate intraoperative ethanol treatment as an adjuvant therapy after Pterygium excision. This study included20 eye of 20 patients presented to the outpatient clinic of the Ophthalmology Department in Menoufia University Hospital during the period from January 2014 until June 2015. The average age was (range from 27 to 73) years, all 20 cases were unilateral nasal pterygium, and 14 cases of them were outdoor (farmmers) workers while 6 cases of them were indoor workers. The cases were randomly divided into 2 groups (each formed of 10 eyes) according to application of intraoperative 20% ethanol prior to surgical excision of pterygium performing bare sclera technique, Informed consents were obtained from all patients included in the study after the nature of the study had been explained Detailed slit lamp examination and photograph documentation prior to surgery.Ethanol treatment group, in this group application of intraoperative 20% ethanol during excision of pterygium performing bare sclera technique. This group included 4 males and 6 females, their age ranged from 27-73 years .6 patients worked outdoors while 4 patients worked indoors. Control group, in this group, pterygia were excised with bare sclera technique without application of intraoperative 20% ethanol. These group included4 males and 6 females, their age ranged from 30 to 72 years. 8patients worked outdoors while 2 patients worked indoors The results of our study demonstrated that ethanol administered over a very short time interval intraoperatively (20% ethanol for 60 seconds) is a safe and effective way to reduce the pterygium recurrence rate after excision of pterygium. In the current study, the low pterygium recurrence rate, the high level of cosmetic satisfaction, the simplicity of the procedure, the minimal risk of minor side effects, and the lack of major complications after treatment lead us to recommend this regimen as an alternative for the treatment of pterygium.
