Abstract 85 strains of Yersinia enterocolitica were isolated from different water samples collected from River Nile ”El-Maadi as well as Rod El-Farag”, Ismailia canal and El-Zomor canal in addition to hand pumps water samples. All these strains were biochemically identified as Yersinia enterocolitica. These strains were furtherly identified to serogroups 0:9, 0:6, 0:3 as well as untyped strains which were not react with 0:9, 0:6 or 0:3 antisera. Each water sample was examined for heterotrophic plate count, total coliform, faecal coliform as well as faecal streptococci. Survival experiments of Yersinia enterocolitica were conducted to study the effect of different environmental conditions. Effect of: changing the natural habitat to tap water, sea water, tap water contami nated with sewage, temperature, pH, organic matters, starvation, heterotrophic bacteria and sun light, as well as different disinfectants such as chlorine, chloramine and UV on the survival of different serogroup were covered through this study. Finally the sensitivity of different serogroups to 26 antibiotics was determined. |
