Abstract

Episiotomy is one of the common causes of discomfort during the first few postpartum days. Episiotomy wound not only causes physical damage but it also causes emotional, psychological, mental disorders during postpartum and change the mother’s attitude and activities towards her child. Delay in the wound healing leads to increase in the intensity of pain at perineal area.
The process of wound cleansing involves selecting a cleansing solution and a method of delivering the solution to the wound. Wound cleansing has been a controversial topic for many years. Normal saline is favored as it is an isotonic solution with hyperosmolar effect and does not interfere with the normal healing process. Thus, normal saline dressing can have anti inflammatory action, increases the local blood flow by decreasing edema by drawing wound fluid out and desloughs the wound.
On the other hand, cool boiled water is also an effective wound cleansing solution and has advantages of being cost effective and easily accessible Thus; the aim of study was to evaluate the effect of using saline dressing versus cool boiled water on episiotomy wound healing among postnatal mothers. The main hypothesis of the current study were that there will be significant difference in the episiotomy wound healing among postnatal mothers using saline dressing and cool boiled water.
The study was conducted in postpartum unit of obstetrics and gynecology department at Benha University Hospital. The sample was simple random sample and consisted of 100 postnatal mothers had vaginal delivery with episiotomy. The women were divided into two main groups; (group A) consists of 50 postnatal mothers with application of normal saline dressing on episiotomy wound with betadine

for seven days. (group B) consists of 50 postnatal mothers with application of cool boiled water dressing on episiotomy wound with betadine for seven days. The studied samples were selected according to the inclusion criteria; age 18 to 38 years, can read and write, delivered vaginally with episiotomy, no immediate postnatal complications and without any medical diseases (anemia, diabetes mellitus, and cardiac diseases).
