Abstract Gabal Um Tenassib area is located at the extreme North Eastern Desert of Egypt, between latitudes 28° 28’ and 28˚ 35’ N and longitudes 32˚ 25’ and 32˚ 40’E covering about 123 km2 The detailed field study of the exposed rock types in the area shows that it contains both metamorphic and igneous rocks. The analysis of landsat image lineaments shows that ENE-WSW and NNW-SSE trends are the most prevailing trends in area of study. The younger granites are the youngest rock unit of the studied area. According to the detailed petrographic investigation, the studied older granitoids are tonalite and granodiorite while younger granites are monzogranite and syenogranite. The geochemical investigations revealed that these granites are differentiated from medium to high K calc alkaline magma and belong to a post collision setting. The geochemistry of both uranium and thorium revealed that they are mainly hosted by zircon and columbite of the younger granites. The previous result was asserted by the mineralogical study of the younger granites. Fifty two stream sediment samples from the main wadi; Wadi Um Tenassib and its tributaries, levels (A&B) were subjected to the mineralogical investigations in order to identify their constituents. The common heavy minerals obtained from the studied stream sediments in G.Um Tenassib area can be classified into two groups: opaque and non opaque minerals. from the constructed radiometric maps, the contour lines more or less coincide with the rock contacts. The radioactivity values reflect a systematic increase from the older granitoids to the younger granites. More detailed analytical measurements were carried out on the studied stream sediments samples. It is noticed that the uranium content in the main wadi decreases with depth, while thorium content increases. The inspection of biscuit (small tile) for the placer feldspar from the studied area showed that the placer feldspars of the studied area can be used for wall and floor ceramic industry. The results of the technical tests suggest that the Um Tenassib younger granites can be used for ornamental stone industry. Finally, economic aspects of the feldspars in the studied area were compiled to give an idea about to what extent costs can be saved in ceramic industry. The studying of joint systems besides the results of the technical tests suggest that Um Tenassib granites can be used for ornamental stone industry. |
