Abstract The aim of this work was to characterize the Egyptian blast furnace slag in order to define its suitability for the replacement of O.P.C. for the production of slag cement according to international specification. The investigations were carried out through analysing the Egyptian blast - furnace slag chemically in order to define its hydraulic behaviour and basicity. Also, the study comprised the estimation of the percentage of glassy and crystalline phases by means of optical microscope (counting method). The behaviour of the actual slag replacing O.P.C. in cement pastes and mortars in water and aggressive sulphate solution was followed . It was found that the Egyptian blast • furnace slag does not show the higher properties for hydraulic cement behaviour, its basicity is relatively low and also its glass content is low. Therefore, its behaviour as cement replacement in water and sulphate solution is quite improper, it shows weaker properties than O.P.C. and sulphate resisting cement (S.R.C.) although according to international specification, it should response better to sulphate attack than the O.P.C. because of the reduction of C3 A content through the slag replacement and the presence of glassy phase. In order to improve the grade of the Egyptian blast -furnace slag, the calcium oxide content should be increased and the cooling condition should be modified to quenching in order to attain 95% glassy phase. |
