Abstract

Floppy infants are the infants presenting with hypotonia (+\-hyporeflexia) in the first two years of life. Hypotonia is a state of low muscle tone associated with disorders of brain, spinal cord, nerves or muscles.
This study aims to evaluate cases with hypotonia of neuromuscular origin, classify them according to their etiological diagnosis and assess sensitivity of electromyography in etiological diagnosis of hypotonia of neuromuscular origin.
This cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted in the neuropediatrc clinic of Fayoum University Hospital and included 42 cases presenting with hypotonia due to peripheral causes (neuromuscular causes).
In our study, ENMG is helpful in diagnosis of 90% of all cases of our study. ENMG is also helpful in tool in diagnosis of floppy infants and also helpful in differention beween neuropathic and myopathic causes.
Our study shows that SMA is the most common cause of floppiness in infants presenting with peripheral hypotonia in Fayoum governorate (57.5%).EMG is very accurate and sensitive to diagnose SMA by neuropathic potentials in a regular discharging pattern (AHC affection) obtained by all EMG studies.EMG is more accurate than detection of Exon 7 deletion of SMN1 gene in SMA type 1 and type 2.
